Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is a 15th century Inca creation with sweeping views of the mountainous region and river seemingly miles below. It is incredible to think of the work involved in building these walls and structures so high up with such precision to withstand the test of time. Approximately 80% of the structures are original, with only 20% reinforcement. While we did not climb the Inca Trail, a four day trek, we did climb to the highest point of the main visitor area which looks across at the vertical trail peak. While a tourist driven spot and an even more tourist focused down town sitting below the towering mountains, Machu Picchu is an amazing destination. We took the Perurail once more through gorgeous mountains from Cusco to Machu Picchu, then joined the extensive bus line for the final. Zig zagging trek up the steep mountainside. The bus might be considered its own adventure. The altitude is such that it is work to climb. Going down is significantly easier. The steep rock faces and tropical lush greens coexist the glory of the Machu Picchu village in the middle.
