Adelaide is a wonderful little city and the capital of South Australia. We learned here that Good Friday, and not Easter Day, is the huge holiday. Also that on any public holidays there is a 10-15% premium literally added to everything. Go Australia!
We enjoyed Adelaide as a central post for three brief excursions, first to the german town of Hahndorf and the wine region that flows from it including Barossa. We visited Hahndorf Hills Winery, Golding and then landed at Steppenfeld right as it closed, but the countryside was worth the drive.
We also spent a day driving the South Coast Road a 31k route that resembled some southern CA towns but with the most beautiful beaches and red rocks. The community has cut a beautiful walking trail into the rock right along the coast. The waves are good for surfing and many were giving it a go.
We caught the Adelaide Crows at the AFL stadium in a commanding game. We don’t know enough about how Aussie Football works, but the game experience was fantastic and we could see the US taking in this much loved sport. We hear there is already a league in the states. The game seems more of a mix of rugby and soccer and lacrosse but with no sticks, a ball more like a football, and amazingly no equipment. Most amazing to us was that despite the physicality of the game, there was not a single injury. Wow.
